Summary

Social, political, and legal context of managing diversity; concepts used in diversity management, including equality and inclusion; stereotyping and unconscious bias; intersectional approaches to understanding inequalities; business case approaches and their limits; organizational practices and interventions in diversity management; trade unions and diversity.

Target Students

Part II Business School students who have studied BUSI1029 Organisational Behaviour AND BUSI2173 Human Resource Management with International Perspective or BA Hons Geography with Business who have studied BUSI2173 Human Resource Management with International Perspective or BA Hons Modern Languages with Business who have studied BUSI2173 Human Resource Management with International Perspective. Also available to Erasmus students.

Classes

17.5 hours Lectures and Seminars. 11 x 1 hour synchronous lecture engagements. 11 x30 minutes ansynchronous lecture recordings. 1 x 1 hour Tutorial. 52.5 hours independent study and background reading. 30 hours coursework preparation. Total 100 hours.

Assessment

Educational Aims

Diversity management is a burning issue in contemporary organisational life. In both the private and public sectors, organisations face decision-making dilemmas and management challenges in virtue of the increasingly diverse nature of their membership. This final year module aims to explore diversity management from a range of different contexts, highlighting the interaction of theory and practice. This will provide students with the conceptual resources needed to understand and critically engage in fast-moving debates.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding
This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
•    The dynamic and changing nature of business and the consideration of the future of organisations within the global business environment, including the management of risk.
•    The management of customer expectations, relationships and development of service excellence.
•    Leadership, management and development of people and organisations including the implications of the legal context.
•    The development of appropriate policies and strategies within a changing environment to meet stakeholder interests.
•    The need for individuals and organisations to manage responsibly and sustainably and behave ethically in relation to social, cultural, economic and environmental issues.
•    The design, development of organisations, including cross-cultural issues, change, diversity and values.

Intellectual Skills
This module develops:
•    Conceptual and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

Professional Practice Skills
This module develops:
•    Self-analysis and awareness/sensitivity to diversity in terms of people and cultures. This includes a continuing appetite for development.
•    People management, to include communications, team building, leadership and motivating others.

Transferable (Key) Skills
This module develops:
•    Self-management and a readiness to accept responsibility and flexibility, to be resilient, self-starting and appropriately assertive, to plan, organise and manage time.
•    Emotional intelligence and empathy.
