Summary

Historical introduction to the development of quality thinking. Contributions from Scientific management and the Human Factors Themes. The need for quality in manufacturing and the service sector. Definitions of quality. Quality management definitions and concepts. The concepts of Total Quality Management. The Quality Gurus. The contributions of Deming, Juran Freigenbaum, Crosby, Ishikawa, Shingo. Cultural change and empowerment for Total Quality. Continuous improvement, tools and techniques. Six Sigma. Kaizen. Variables and Attributes. Specification, tolerance and conformance. Variation (common and special cases). Introduction to Statistical Quality Control including Process Capability, Shewhart control charts. Control limits. CUSUM charts. Acceptance sampling for attributes. Quality techniques for design. Quality Function Deployment, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, Taguchi loss function, experimental design, orthogonal arrays. Other quality issues.

Target Students

Level 2 and Levels 3/4 undergraduate students who are taking or have taken BUSI1032 Managing Operations in the Digital Enterprise or BUSI2047 Supply Chain and Operations Planning. Also available to Exchange Students.

Educational Aims

Quality and its management are key aspects of modern business and have a great impact on both industrial and service sector enterprises. This module aims to develop an understanding of the issues involved and the approaches employed in quality management and a knowledge of the techniques of quality improvement.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
This module develops a knowledge and understanding of:
•    The management of customer expectations, relationships and development of service excellence
•    The management of quality systems
•    Develop and understanding of the issues involved and the management techniques employed in Quality Management, Total Quality, Six Sigma and Business Excellence.
•    Understand the concepts of variation in goods and services and of Statistical Quality Control.
•    Understand the concepts of advanced quality planning (FMEA, QFD, Taguchi's Robust Design).
•    Understand the economics of quality.

Intellectual skills
This module develops:
•    Analyse variation in manufacturing processes.
•    Appreciate the techniques of quality improvement.

Professional practical skills
This module develops:
•    Apply Statistical Quality Control techniques such as control charts, process capability analysis and Six Sigma.
•    Apply the techniques of advanced quality planning (FMEA, QFD, Taguchi's Robust Design)

Transferable (key) skills
This module develops:
•    Use IT applications to understand the costs associated with quality control strategies.
