Summary

This module is designed for students with little prior knowledge of Hebrew and will expand their understanding of the grammar, syntax and vocabulary of the Hebrew language, as found in the Hebrew Bible. 

 

The focus of the module will be on reading printed, pointed Hebrew (i.e. Hebrew with vowels), both aloud and for the purposes of understanding and translating. The primary textual focus will be the Hebrew Bible, with graded reading exercises introduced from the start, for those with academic and/or religious interests in the text. 

 

Secondarily, the module will serve as an introduction to Hebrew grammar and syntax for those who wish to acquire modern Hebrew at a later date.

Target Students

Students with academic and/or religious interests in the Hebrew Bible. Primary target will be undergraduate and postgraduate students in TRS who wish to have original language support for their degree study. Students must have previously taken LANG1094 Hebrew 1A or an equivalent.

Educational Aims

To enable students to acquire a full knowledge of the grammar, syntax and vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew. By the end of the module students should be able to (1) understand the essentials of Biblical Hebrew grammar and syntax, with a particular focus on the derived stems of the verbal system and on weak roots and (2) translate simple and intermediate prose sentences.

Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire the ability to read texts from the Hebrew Bible in their original language.

Students will develop interpretative skills, historical understanding and independence of mind.

Students will understand the relationship between translation and interpretation.
