Summary

This module is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Hebrew and will introduce them to the grammar, syntax and vocabulary of the Hebrew language, as found in the Hebrew Bible. 

 

The focus of the module will be on reading printed, pointed Hebrew (i.e. Hebrew with vowels), both aloud and for the purposes of understanding and translating. The primary textual focus will be the Hebrew Bible, with graded reading exercises introduced from the start, for those with academic and/or religious interests in the text. 

 

Secondarily, the module will serve as an introduction to Hebrew grammar and syntax for those who wish to acquire modern Hebrew at a later date. 

Target Students

Students with academic and/or religious interests in the Hebrew Bible. Primary target will be undergraduate and postgraduate students in TRS who wish to have original language support for their degree study. The programme is also likely to attract a number of Jewish students each year from across the university.

Classes

Students will be instructed via a series of seminars throughout term.

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

To enable students to acquire an introduction to the grammar, syntax and vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew. By the end of the module students should be able to (1) understand the essentials of Biblical Hebrew grammar of the nominal system and the qal stem of the verbal system (2) translate simple prose sentences including verbs the qal stem, with other verbs glossed.

Learning Outcomes

Students will acquire the ability to read simple texts from the Hebrew Bible in their original language.

Students will develop interpretative skills and historical understanding.

Students will understand the relationship between translation and interpretation.
