Summary

This module continues the study of Latin from the level reached during a beginners’ Latin course. It provides the opportunity to revise basic aspects of the Latin language and enables students to proceed to the reading of Latin texts. The assessment-pattern emphasises comprehension and analysis of grammatical structures over memorisation and translation.

Target Students

Available to all Postgraduate level 4 students in the Department of Classics and Archaeology, exchange and subsidiary students. The module should be taken with CLAR4032 in the same academic year. Any students with a valid reason why they cannot do both modules, or with other queries, should contact the module convenor.

Educational Aims

This module aims to further develop the ability to read, understand and translate Latin. The module will consolidate the grammatical knowledge acquired in Beginners' Latin: 1 and 2 (Q81BL1-2/Q83BL1-2), expand your working vocabulary, and enable you to begin the study of simple unadapted Latin literary texts.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding:

Latin syntax and its interpretation; critical and theoretical approaches to the study of Latin texts in the original language;

literary, cultural and historical contexts for Latin literature;

the relevance of Latin texts for the study of ancient history, society and visual culture.

Intellectual skills:

Engage in close and logical analysis of texts and arguments;

acquire substantial quantities of information systematically and process it effectively.

Professional Practical Skills:

Read Latin texts independently and with a high level of accuracy and understanding;

translate unseen a  passage in Latin from poetry and non-technical prose at an appropriate level.

Transferable (key) Skills:

Work productively with others;

communicate effectively in writing;

communicate effectively by oral presentation;

organise and manage their working time, including scheduling tasks and meeting deadlines;

word-process material with attention to detail and accuracy;

take responsibility for their own learning, reflect upon and assess their own progress, strengths and weaknesses.
