Summary
This module provides an integrated programme of nutritional epidemiology, life-course nutrition and public health nutrition and policy. The emphasis of the module is on understanding public health nutrition approaches to disease prevention in communities and populations as well as theories of health promotion and behaviour change.
Target Students
MSc/PGDip Advanced Dietetic Practice, MSc/PGDipClinical Nutrition,MSc/PGDip Nutritional Sciences, MPH/PGDip Public Health, and MPH/PGDip Public Health (Global Health).

- 50% Coursework 1: 10-15 mins presentation
- 50% Coursework 2: 2000 word written report

Educational Aims
This module provides an in-depth exploration of current major public health nutrition priorities. It explores the role of diet and nutrition in improving health and the prevention of diet-related ill health in communities and populations. The module takes a life-course approach to explain and develop the concepts of human health and disease as affected by diet, dietary components and interacting factors. Students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to consider practical ways of improving population health within their own scope of practice.Learning Outcomes
- Critically interpret epidemiological data in relation to health & disease.
- Describe human nutrition in the context of the lifespan and changing nutrient requirements.
- Critically evaluate public health nutrition policies, strategies and interventions aimed at preventing diet-related disease.
- Describe public health nutrition in practice including the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programmes.
- Discuss and evaluate the application of health promotion, behaviour change, and health education in relation to nutrition.
