Summary
This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts in the field of Nutrition, including requirements for macronutrients (e.g. proteins, carbohydrates and fats) and micronutrients (e.g. vitamins and minerals).
Target Students
Students studying on the PGDip/MSc Nutritional Sciences, Clinical Nutrition or Sport and Exercise Nutrition programmes.
Classes
- One 1-hour tutorial each week for 4 weeks
- Two 2-hour lectures each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 30% Coursework 1: 1500 - 2000 word essay
- 60% Exam 1 (2-hour): Examsys
- 10% In class ExamSys (1-hour): Vitamins and minerals ExamSys test
Assessed by end of autumn semester
Educational Aims
1) To provide a comprehensive introduction to nutritional science, including ethical issues.2) To emphasise the scientific, evidence based approach to nutrition.3) To illustrate the quantitative nature of nutritional science.4) To develop scientific writing skills, including literature searching, essay structuring, referencing and avoiding plagiarism.Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Explain the role of essential and non-essential nutrients in the diet, including both macro- and micro-nutrients.
2. Explain the factors that regulate energy intake and expenditure.
3. Apply numerical skills to nutritional problems.
4. Critique information from a range of sources on a specialist topic of current research in nutrition.
5. Report on the specialist topic using appropriate academic formats.
