Summary

This module considers:

• The aetiology, pathology and clinical signs of common presentations of disease in the species seen in farm animal clinical veterinary practice
• The diagnosis and investigation of diseases in the species seen in farm animal clinical veterinary practice
• The medical and surgical treatment, management, and control of disease in the species seen in farm animal clinical veterinary practice
• The prevention of diseases in the species seen in farm animal veterinary practice
• The practical, clinical and professional skills needed to work in farm animal clinical veterinary practice
• The link between farm animal and human health

Target Students

Restricted to students registered on the BVM BVS programme only. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the offering school in advance may be cancelled without notice

Classes

A mixture of lectures, practical sessions, workshops and self-directed study.

Assessment

• 40% Practical: OSCE Exam. This element of the assessment must be passed before progression to year 5 of the BVM BVS programme
• 60% In-Class Exam (written): MCQs, EMQs, hot spots and fill in the blanks

Learning Outcomes:

a. Knowledge and understanding:

At the end of this module, the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

• The aetiology, pathology clinical signs, diagnostic techniques, medical and surgical treatments and management and prevention of common diseases of farm animal

b. Intellectual Skills:

At the end of this module, the student should be able to demonstrate that they can:

• Obtain a relevant history for a farm animal problem

• Develop an appropriate diagnostic plan for a farm animal problem

• Integrate and prioritise the findings from a history and other investigations into a farm animal problem

• Develop an appropriate treatment plan for a farm animal

c. Professional practical skills:

At the end of this module the student should be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake:

• A safe, systematic, and thorough clinical examination of farm animals

• Sample collection and investigations of farm animals (including diagnostic imaging techniques and collecting and analysing clinical pathology sample)

• Basic medical and surgical procedures of farm animals (including suturing, neutering, and investigations)

d. Transferable (key) skills:

At the end of this module the student should be able to demonstrate:

• Learning and study techniques which promote life-long learning

• The ability to search for, select and use information for problem-solving and decision making

• Appropriate communication skills, interpersonal skills and team-working ability

• Multi-tasking, including time and resource management
