This module considers:
Concepts of advanced clinical practice and its integration and application to the apprentice speciality.
Evidence based practice.
Complexity, uncertainty and inconsistency associated with advanced clinical practice.
Partnership working, empowering people, capacity decisions and joint care planning.
Resilience and problem-solving skills.
Impact of future technologies in healthcare.
Policy, audit, evaluation and research applicable to apprentice speciality.
Leadership theories and practice.
Clinical governance, risk management, patient safety and human factors.
Teaching, learning and motivational theories, creating a culture of learning in clinical settings.
Supporting and supervising peers, colleagues and learners
Support for portfolio project development to include:
Five short case reports detailing the management of cases the apprentice has treated as an advanced veterinary practitioner, where they have been the primary clinician.
Interdisciplinary teaching session.
Reflection on the leadership and management of a clinical audit and/or service development undertaken in practice by the apprentice during this module.
Situational analysis report to identify and understand a veterinary health issue related to practice
Six tripartite meetings with academic assessor and clinical supervisor.
Complete 200hrs with clinical supervisor.
Target Students
UK registered veterinary surgeons who meet the entry requirements contained in the supplementary regulations
Classes
Module Activity: Resources to facilitate and support apprentice self-directed and optional learning are available. Hours of Activity include: With clinical supervisor 200 hours. Assessment preparation and assessment 100 hours, On the job learning aligned to module content 100 hours. Total activity 400 hours
Assessment
- 30% Coursework: Five short case reports: detailing the management of cases the apperntice has treated as an advanced vertinary practitioner, where they have been the primary clinician (500-1000 words each)
- 10% Coursework: Interdisciplinary teaching session: Apprentice is to lead a learning session on a clinical topic of their choice directed at members of the veterinary team or vets specialising in different disciplines This may take the form of a practical session, lecture, presentation or seminar (500-1000 word reflection)
- 20% Coursework: Reflection of leadership and management of clinical audit: Reflection on the leadership and management of a clinical audit undertaken in practice by the apprentice during this module (1500 words excluding references)
- 40% Coursework: Situational analysis report to identify and understand a veterinary health issue related to practice (6000 words)

Educational Aims
Apprentices are expected to engage in critical thinking and reflection to enable the integration of theory and practice to support competent, safe, high quality veterinary care delivery at an advanced level. The apprentice will critically evaluate current evidence to demonstrate advancement in clinical skills and knowledge including data collection, assessment and therapeutic modalities; leadership and collaborative practice; improving quality and developing veterinary practice for the self and others, gaining experience in integration of theory, research and clinical knowledge related to the goals of interdisciplinary veterinary services and systemsLearning Outcomes
On completion of this module the apprentice will be able to:
Intellectual
Demonstrate confidence in the use of advanced methods of scholarship and techniques to critically evaluate dimensions of theory and practice in their area of advanced clinical practice.
Apply appropriate methods of inquiry through situational analysis to bring about patient/service improvement or policy development within an organisation
Professional
Critically analyse complex problems associated with advanced practice and problem solve to develop solutions based on sound evidence, professional and clinical judgment through self needs analysis and tripartite working with Academic Mentor and Clinical Supervisor.
Demonstrate the integration of best evidence when taking a history, performing a physical examination, decision-making, therapeutic intervention and evaluation acting autonomously in the management of patient care, within the scope of professional practice.
Initiate, lead and manage service developments and risk ensuring the safe and effective organisation and provision of quality patient centred care within recognised clinical governance frameworks.
Critically evaluate relevant clinical guidelines, protocols, benchmarks and outcome measures to develop new approaches to practice.
Critically reflect on situations of complexity, uncertainty and inconsistency, within your specific profession on an interprofessional basis, articulating and communicating concerns and information effectively.
Demonstrate knowledge of educational theories to create an effective learning culture in collaboration with peers that provides appropriate professional and interdisciplinary learning opportunities to maximise achievement for individuals
