Summary
This module extends throughout the second year of study.
There are 30 days of work-based learning, broken down as follows:
The skills will be consolidated and developed by 30 days of work-based learning with qualified practicing veterinary physiotherapists in their fields of expertise. These days are arranged on an individual basis by contacting the provider. SVMS maintains an approved list of providers who deliver these training days.
Target Students
Restricted to students registered on the veterinary physiotherapy programme only. There is a limited number of places on this module. Students are reminded that enrolments which are not agreed by the Offering School in advance may be cancelled without notice.
Classes
- One 1-hour workshop each week for
- One 8-hour placement each week for 30 weeks
Home study 10-15 hours per week
Assessment
- Practical: Must complete all days and must pass.
- 50% Case History Paper: Case histories, appropriate per question.
- 50% Coursework 2: Reflective portfolio.
Assessed by end of designated period
Educational Aims
Building on the skills from year one, VETS4023 develops clinical assessment, reasoning and evaluating outcomes measures into exercise programming and rehabilitation. There is a heavy emphasis on in-field experience achieved by 30 days of work-based learning. For these days you will be working alongside practicing veterinary physiotherapists on the day-to-day cases referred for treatment. You will also develop communication skills to enable you to engage with other professionals and with owners. Progress in this module is measured by the Record of Achievement which addresses day-one competencies via the demonstration of professional skills (DOPS)Learning Outcomes
(a) Knowledge and Understanding
Demonstrate a systematic and critical understanding of underpinning theory related to clinical practice.
Include ethical and safety issues and relevant legislation which directly relates to clinical practice.
(b) Intellectual Skills
Critically evaluate outcome measures to assess and adapt case management
Integrate clinical findings into a treatment regime
Evaluate and select appropriate rehabilitation and electrotherapy techniques in order to control or resolve the clinical signs.
Critically evaluate a musculoskeletal and neurological assessment.
(c) Professional Practical Skills
Competently perform a musculoskeletal and neurological assessment.
Incorporate functional biomechanics into a musculoskeletal and neurological assessment
Skilfully execute appropriate rehabilitation and electrotherapy techniques in order to control or resolve the clinical signs.
(d) Transferrable (Key) Skills
Reflect on feedback and individual competence to plan professional development.
Take into account the practicalities of cost and compliance with treatment plans.
