Summary
This module delivers knowledge and skills in veterinary education using a workplace based model at the school of Veterinary Medicine and Science or relevant Clinical Associate practices. Students will spend 75-85% of their time engaged in supervised teaching activities. Students will learn to teach across a range of different contexts e.g. practical sessions, small group teaching, clinical teaching. Students will gain comprehensive experience in teaching session design and delivery, and assessment practices and quality assurance.
Target Students
Students registered on the Postgraduate Certificate of Veterinary Education.
Classes
- Ten 1-hour un assigneds each week for 48 weeks
- Twelve 1-hour tutorials each week for 48 weeks
- Ten 1-hour practicums each week for 38 weeks
This module is full time, 37 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, with 4 weeks of annual leave Periods of time where there are no undergraduate teaching activity include 2 x 3 week blocks (Christmas and June) Supervision for research projects doesn’t occur weekly but does occur throughout the year, with a minimum of 10 supervisions Tutorials do not occur weekly, these are scheduled throughout the year Practicum relates to workplace based teaching activity, where students are required to engage in a minimum of 10 hours teaching or teaching related activity per week for 38 weeks of the year.
Assessment
- 65% Dissertation: Dissertation on a veterinary education topic OR a critical appraisal of the literature (max 8000 words).
- 30% Coursework 1: Teaching portfolio - portfolio to contain evidence of teaching activities and educational research undertaken during period of study, and reflection on these activities.
- 5% Coursework 2: Research plan - outlining research project plan. The project plan MUST be submitted within the first 2 months of the module and passed to allow progression and for the dissertation to be undertaken.

The aim of this module is to provide a basic level of knowledge and skills of veterinary education, for recent veterinary science graduates (MRCVS’) or those studying toward the qualification at SVMS.Learning Outcomes
