Summary
This module enables students to develop practical and clinical skills through self-directed and taught sessions and through animal husbandry placements. Students will complete an audit of their knowledge and skills to date in relation to the veterinary degree programme. They will develop their understanding of methods of teaching and assessment and of professional conduct in relation to the veterinary profession.
The module includes a 4-week external placement which will contribute to student learning as per the requirements of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
Target Students
Restricted to students registered on the Graduate Entry Veterinary programme U6UVTMVSA1
Classes
- One 1-hour tutorial
- Six 2-hour seminars each week for 2 weeks
- One 4-hour practicum
- One 8-hour placement each week for 4 weeks
Week 1 consists of skills audit, assessment preparation and clinical skills practical sessions Weeks 2-5 consist of 4 weeks of full-time placement to be completed at an external animal husbandry or clinical host Week 6 consists of tutorials and assessment. Directed self-study is timetabled as a seminar activity but in the most part this will be undertaken on an individual basis by the student

Educational Aims
The aims of this module are to provide students with the opportunity to review and develop key animal handling and practical skills to enable them to effectively learn during preclinical and clinical EMS placements and throughout the veterinary degree programme.Learning Outcomes
Review methods of learning, study and assessment within the BVMBVS programme
Develop an understanding of the professional role of the Veterinary Surgeon and their role in wider society
Perform a full systems examination of common domestic species
Demonstrate safe handling of common domestic species
Reflect on existing competence and identify areas for development
Identify and complete external placements based on self-audit and to fulfil RCVS EMS requirements
