Summary

This module concerns the development of Christology from the Apostolic Age to the present. Through a close reading of a range of thinkers (including Irenaeus of Lyon, Cyril of Alexandria, Leo the Great, Maximus the Confessor, Thomas Aquinas, Anselm of Canterbury, John Duns Scotus, John Calvin, Karl Barth and Sergii Bulgakov) we will examine some of the key issues of Christology including the doctrines of the hypostatic union and the 'communication idioms', the nature of what is 'revealed' in Christ, different theories of 'soteriology' (how the work of Christ 'saves').

Educational Aims

This module has two aims. First, the module will develop students’ understanding of the development of Christological doctrine through the study of primary texts from across the history of Christianity. Secondly, the module will enable students to apply the ‘tools’ of Christlogical doctrine in the exploration of fresh questions or new constructive issues in Christology
