Summary
This module introduces religious traditions from Africa and Asia, including Traditional African Religion, Sikhism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Daoism. Students will be taught by lectures offering the background to a series of primary texts, which are analysed in the seminars. A single coursework essay/assignment will replace all failed assessment components at the reassessment stage.

Available to all students, including subsidiary, liberal arts, and exchange students.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 1-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: 2000 word portfolio of short essays

Educational Aims
The module aims to introduce students to a variety of non-western religious traditions and broaden their understanding first, of diverse modes of religious and thought and practice and second, of different genres and styles of writing. It aims to equip them with the professional skills of close reading for analysis of texts.Learning Outcomes
Knowledge and understanding of three key texts from non-western religious traditions, gaining an understanding of the breadth of the discipline of TRS
Intellectual skills: be able to read texts clearly and understand the principles of scholarly writing
Professional and practical skills: Demonstrate an ability to use scholarly sources in Theology and Religious Studies, to write essays at university level, and to reference sources correctly
Transferable skills: to be able to engage in the practice of sustained reading of challenging texts
Transferrable skills: to be able to engage in discussion and debate about texts and ideas
Transferrable skills: demonstrate an ability to develop logical arguments and to communicate arguments coherently in written work and verbally
