Summary

This module prepares students for future social work practice with adults and families. The module will cover key issues in Adult Social Care policy and practice and the specific issues related to working with different service user groups. Sessions will be led by practitioners, experts by experience and academic staff. The overall pass mark for the module is 50%. Compensation between module elements is not allowed: both assessments must receive marks of 50% or above.

Target Students

Available for final year MA Social Work or PGDIP Social Work students. Also available to students on a MA SSR programme (all pathways) in the School of Sociology and Social Policy.

This module is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.

Educational Aims

This module aims to:Develop in students a framework for reflective learning that they continue to use in practice.Introduce students to key issues in contemporary practice and policy with adults and families.Provide students with an understanding of the lived experiences of those needing and using social work services.Support students to begin to develop an understanding of their professional development and current and future learning needs.Provide opportunities for students to connect academic learning with practice.Provide students with the opportunity to reflect on the values and ethical frameworks for effective social work practice.

Learning Outcomes

1). To recognise the importance of the family and community systems within which each individual is embedded, including the impacts of structural inequalities and discrimination.

2). To critically analyse different experiences and conceptualisations of care based on culture, gender, age and class.

3). Be able to critically reflect on the potential impact of their own values and positionality on social work practice with adults and their families.

4). To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the specific needs of adults, including the impact of mental capacity on decision-making.

5). Demonstrate a critical understanding of abuse and neglect and the role of Safeguarding Adults legislation.

6). Be able to critically evaluate the role of law, policy, guidance and the KSS in supporting good outcomes for adults and their families.
