Summary
This module will equip students with the necessary research awareness to critically analyse published research which is of relevance to their professional practice. It will provide students with sufficient understanding of research methods, including research ethics, to prepare them to undertake their MA Social Work dissertation, whether this takes the form of an original empirical study or a systematic literature review.
Both components of the assessment must be passed in order to pass this module.
Target Students
Only available for MA Social Work students or PGDip Social Work students.
Classes
The module will now be convened entirely in the Summer in 4 x 5 hour workshops, all in one week.
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: 2,000 words.

Educational Aims
This module aims to:• Introduce students to key social science research methods.• Enable students to critically evaluate research studies and their limitations.• Support students to develop an outline of the work they will undertake for their MA Social Work dissertation.Learning Outcomes
1). Understand the difference been quantitative and qualitative research methods and their suitability or otherwise as a mode of investigation for different phenomena (SWE PS: 3.5).
2). Be able to critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of existing research, including research which contributes to the evidence base for social work practice (SWE PS: 3.7).
3). Be able to make links between research, their own continuing professional development and practice (SWE PS: 4.3).
4). Contribute to an open and creative learning culture, by developing a dissertation proposal which explores an area of Social Work practice and meets the basic requirement of an MA Social Work dissertation (SWE PS: 4.5).
