Summary

This module prepares students for social work practice. It concentrates on the skills necessary to engage with service users and offers an overview of the social work process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation (APIE). This provides students with a basic theoretical framework for social work practice in which the nature of social work theory is examined in relation to assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation. The module also considers the influence of values on social work practice. 

Target Students

Only available for MA Social Work students or PGDip Social Work students.

Classes

This module is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. Students must attend Skills Days.

Educational Aims

This module aims to prepare students for practice situations through the development, enhancement and rehearsal of social work skills, such as communication, observation and reflection. Students are encouraged to explore personal and professional value systems which can impact on social work practice. A range of theoretical perspectives, alongside their contribution to methods and models of intervention, are examined and applied to case scenarios.Knowledge and Skills Statements (KSS):The KSS set out the knowledge and skills expected of a newly qualified social worker at the end of their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE).The module content is linked where appropriate to these KSS statements and this module specifically will contribute towards the development of knowledge and skills in the following areas of the:Child and Family Social Work1. Role of child and family social work2. Adult mental ill-health, substance misuse, domestic violence, physical ill-health and disability6. Child and family assessments7. The law and the family justice systemSocial Workers in Adults services:2. The role of Social workers working with adults6. Effective assessments and outcome based support planning8. Supervision, critical reflection and analysis.9. Organisational context10. Professional ethics and leadership.

Learning Outcomes

1.    Be able to critically evaluate knowledge and understanding of the strengths, limitations and application of different theoretical frameworks to social work (presentation).

2.    Be able to clearly articulate the core values and communication skills underpinning social work practice (presentation).

3.    Demonstrate the ability to utilise professional knowledge ethically to promote effective social work with people (report).

4.    Demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on the professional role of the social worker and the impact of power on diverse people and their communities (report).

5.    Demonstrate the ability to organise, summarise and present key information in an appropriate and professional manner (presentation).

6.    Be able to identify knowledge and apply skills to assess and evaluate risk and strengths and address social care needs (report).

7.    Demonstrate the ability to hold different explanations in mind and use evidence to inform professional decisions (report).

8.    Be able to critically reflect on own learning (presentation).
