Summary
This module prepares students for future social work practice with adults and families. The module will cover key issues in Adult Social Care policy and practice and the specific issues related to working with different service user groups. Sessions will be led by practitioners, experts by experience and academic staff.
The overall pass mark for the module is 40% and all module elements are non-compensatable (i.e. students must pass each assessment at 40%).
Target Students
Only available for year 3 BA Hons Social Work students.
Classes
This module is taught through a combination of lectures and seminars.
Assessment
- 75% Coursework: 2,000 words.
- 25% Group Presentation: 25 minutes.

Educational Aims

1. To recognise the importance of the family and community systems within which each individual is embedded, including the impacts of structural inequalities and discrimination.
2. To recognise different experiences and conceptualisations of care based on culture, gender, age and class.
3. Be able to reflect on the potential impact of their own values and positionality on social work practice with adults and their families.
4. To demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the specific needs of adults, including the impact of mental capacity on decision-making.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of abuse and neglect and the role of Safeguarding Adults legislation.
6. Be able to evaluate the role of law, policy, guidance and the KSS in supporting good outcomes for adults and their families.
