Summary

The course will provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge and training to work as part of a medical team in professional team and event medicine. 

This will include the immediate management of an injured athlete, the multidisciplinary approach to sport injury management, anti-doping, and medico-legal and ethical issues in professional sport. The course will also provide an insight into specific issues associated with a range of sports both pitchside and at large scale sporting events with the practical aspects of medical management. The module will also examine appropriate management options of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries using an evidence base and current practice.  Special considerations in Disability sport would be examined.  

The course will include the material required for the acquisition of a sport-specific pitchside trauma management qualification.  Students will also have the opportunity to observe and provide pitchside emergency care cover at sports events at the University of Nottingham (compulsory). Placements with professional sport teams can also be arranged for students (optional).

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to give students the knowledge and confidence to work as a team medical practitioner, with ability to provide pitch-side medical care and input into management of sporting injuries and related illness. This course will provide the grounding and experience for students to take up sporting positions within sporting teams and provide event cover for sporting events (within limitations of their individual practice). The integration of common sporting injury knowledge and approaches to management will be promoted based on research led medicine and current daily practice of elite sport clinicians.

Knowledge and Understanding:


All students must be able to:


Understand the requirements of the day to day role of a medical health care practitioner working in sports; 
 

Discuss the common injuries seen in specific sports;, including disability sport, with an understanding of the anatomy and mechanisms;

 

Appreciate which injuries the student can safely assess and manage and understand their competency to treat an injured athlete; 
 

 Understand and discuss the appropriate management options of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries;

 

Understand and have knowledge of current up to date literature to provide an educated choice of management options of common sporting injuries; 
 

Debate the ethical issues within sport and understand the anti-doping regulations in sport;

 

Understand the psychological aspects of competitive sport, both for the injured and healthy athlete.
 

Skills: 
All students will be able to:

Assess the injured athlete with respect to basic and life threatening injuries in a timely manner; 
 

Lead and act within a team of medical professionals attending a pitch side incident/injury and at larger sporting events; 
 

Understand their own role with the multidisciplinary team that is required to effectively manage an athlete back to peak performance.
