Summary

This course seeks to develop students' critical appraisal skills in order that they can take an evidence based approach to their work. It covers the strengths and weaknesses of different types of study design, key principals relevant to evaluating research (both quantitative and qualitative), whether a published journal paper or undertaking their own research projects. Students will also be taught how to use a statistical software as well as about qualitative analysis. It also demonstrates how to use critical appraisal tools to assess published work.

MSc/PGDip Sports and Exercise Medicine and MSc Applied Sports and Exercise Medicine students

This course will be taught using a combination of lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions.

Educational Aims

The overall aim of this course is to develop students’ critical appraisal skills in order that they can take an evidence based approach to their work. In doing so it will also enable students to undertake a high-quality research project, from conception and design through to comprehensive quantitative and/or qualitative analyses and critique.

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:
All students must be able to (in relation to health research):
(K1) Understand, and be able to differentiate between, study designs;
 

(K2) Critically appraise the research literature relevant to their research area;
 

(K3) Understand and be able to define and apply key statistical principles and recognise underlying concepts and conceptual debates in qualitative research;
 

(K4) Have knowledge of a range of methods of quantitative and qualitative research data analyses
 

(K5) Determine the correct method of analyses to apply to a particular dataset / hypothesis;
 

(K6) Undertake analysis and interpretation of research data
 

Skills:
All students will be able to:
(S1) Read and critically appraise research in a structured and systematic way;
 

(S2) Take a comprehensive and ethical approach to data handling;
 

(S3) Use SPSS to conduct statistical analysis
 


(S4) Undertake transcription and organisation of data, and to perform preliminary analyses of qualitative data
