Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to give students the knowledge and confidence to be able to provide pitchside and immediate first aid in the sporting situation across a wide range of sports. It will also provide the grounding and experience for students to take up sporting positions within a high level team. Teaching will also cover other therapies and treatments to provide students with other tools and techniques they can use to support a team/athlete. The pitchside qualification will provide students with training and knowledge in practical emergency medical management in sport, for example, including cardiovascular resuscitation, airway management, c-spine management and the acute management of the injured athlete. The lectures and placements will provide an opportunity for students to establish a basic understanding of the mechanisms of sports injuries and to be aware of medico-legal responsibilities. They also provide students with the opportunity to implement their pitch-side medical skills and to, optionally, work in a team at a large scale sporting event. Students will be educated about other therapies and treatments, such as taping and sports massage, that they can use to help maintain and improve the health and performance of their athletes.
