Summary
Students will be introduced to the main theoretical and practical issues relating to learning, training, appraisal, career development, workplace counselling, coaching and mentoring.The course begins with outlining theories of learning and the application of these to training development and design in organisations. Elements of the training cycle are discussed, including training needs analysis, training transfer and evaluation of training. Different methods of training delivery are evaluated, including consideration of elearning and online training, whilst the development of innovation and creativity are also considered. The second part of the module focuses on employee development from a careers perspective and students are given the opportunity to explore practical implications by planning their own career development. Theories of occupational choice and career development are explored and the role of coaching, counselling and mentoring in relation to employee development are examined. Throughout the course, there is in emphasis on considering the influence of individual, organisational and social factors in employee training and development.
Target Students
Students registered on the MSc in OP, MSc in WAOP, MSc in MP in the Division of Psychiatry and Applied Psychology.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
- One 3-hour lecture each week for 10 weeks
Seminars take place at various times throughout the course. Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks.
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: 2,500 word essay (Career Development).
- 50% Exam 1 (2-hour): 1 x 2 hour exam (Learning Training and Appraisal).

Educational Aims
Thiscourse aims to provide a knowledge base in relation to workplace learning, training and development from which students can build with practical experience. On completion of this course, students should be able to:-Understand the main principles of learning and how this relates to individual differences-Outline the stages of the training cycle and understand of the main issues relating to the design, provision and evaluation of training in the workplace-Evaluate different methods of training delivery including online and elearning.-Discuss the main issues in individual development-Debate the different approaches to workplace appraisals and succession planning-Outline and evaluate different theories of occupational choice and career development-Critically evaluate approaches to workplace counselling-Understand the role and application of coaching and mentoringLearning Outcomes
