Summary

This course introduces the important issues of leadership, employee motivation and engagement at work, and considers the contribution that psychological theory makes to our understanding of these areas. The course also considers the role of the psychological contract and organisational justice as concepts for understanding employee relations and explores the opposing issues of citizenship and counterproductive behaviours. There is also a focus on appraising employee performance with emphasis on exploring the global move towards engaging with multisource feedback.

Target Students

Postgraduate students in the School of Medicine registered on Masters courses in Occupational Psychology, Work and Organisational Psychology, Management Psychology.

Classes

Activities may take place every teaching week of the Semester or only in specified weeks. It is usually specified above if an activity only takes place in some weeks of a Semester.

Assessed by end of summer vacation

Educational Aims

This course aims to provide students with knowledge of human behaviour and employee relations in organisations and how leadership styles can influence these phenomena. There is specific emphasis on how psychology (specifically social and occupational psychology) can contribute to our knowledge of employee and leadership behaviour at work. On completion of this module students should be able to:• Understand the conceptual and theoretical foundations of employee relations• Reflect on the role of the individual, team and organization in managing the employee-employer relationship• Understand the positive and negative outcomes of managing/not managing the employee-employer relationship
