Summary
In this course the student will:
• research
• plan
• design
• gather data
• analyse and
• write up the findings
of a novel qualitative, quantitative or neuroimaging study conducted independently by the student with supervision from members of Division of Psychiatry & Applied Psychology staff.
Target Students
MSc in Mental Health: Research and Practice students, PG Diploma in Mental Health: Research and Practice students, PG Certificate in Mental Health: Research and Practice students.
Classes
- One 1-hour un assigned each week for 10 weeks
The student will attend a maximum of 10 formally documented supervision sessions of sufficient duration (approx 1 hour) to enable issues to be addressed around:• research topic and specific ideas • background reading, rationale and hypotheses • design and methods • data collection and synthesis • data analyses • interpretation and discussion of findings
Assessment
- 100% Dissertation: The 8,000-10,000 word thesis will comprise the following sections: abstract, introduction, method, results,discussion. Quantitative methods projects must be within 8000 words. Mixed methods and qualitative methods projects must be within 10,000 words.

Educational Aims
The aim of this module is to develop the students’ capacity to initiate, design, pursue and present high quality forward-looking research studies that inform theory and/or practice in mental health and applied psychology.Learning Outcomes

- Acquired a working knowledge of research methods in mental health research
