Summary
This module provides students with the knowledge to be able to select, administer, score, interpret, and provide feedback on educational tests of the kind used when assessing individuals with learning difficulties. They will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of different types of assessment and how to make decisions about test selection for assessments. Students will gain an understanding of test theory including the concepts of reliability, validity and the standardization of tests. The module will provide a skill set that will be useful to students completing their project in which they may have to administer psychometric tests. It will also be useful to students wishing to pursue a career in education or educational psychology.
Target Students
Students on Developmental Disorders Masters. Available for MSci Psychology students and MSci Natural Sciences students with permission of the course director or module convenor. Due to the hands-on and interactive nature of assessment exercises, the number of students taking this module will be limited.
Classes
The module will comprise taught & interactive classroom-based sessions (2 hours per week for 10 weeks) and workshops (2 hours per week for 10 weeks). The taught sessions will comprise lecture and practical or discussion elements. The workshops will give students opportunities to practice skills and work towards coursework elements. There will also be 5 hours supported test administration practice sessions in semester 2.

Educational Aims
To give students a comprehensive grounding in the principles of psychological assessment. This will allow students to go on to become assessors of individuals with developmental psychopathology and will enable students to make judgements about assessment usage in practice and research settings.Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of psychological testing and assessment within an educational context.
- Demonstrate an ability to engage with a psychological test manual to extract key information about a test and to critique tests.
- Demonstrate an ability to administer standardised educational tests.
- Demonstrate an ability to record results, interpret test outcomes, give feedback and make decisions about the use of test results.
- Demonstrate an understanding of theories of intelligence and the rationale for choosing particular tests.
- Demonstrate an understand of the properties of psychometric tests including the concepts of reliability and validity, test standardization and scaling of scores.
