Summary

This module will cover the basic concepts and assumptions with respect to univariate and multivariate statistics, as well as issues relating to field studies, ethics, the reliability and validity issues as well as basic qualitative techniques. The module will cover ANOVA, post-hoc tests, power, multiple linear regression, factor analysis, the nature of causality and field designs (both experimental and quasi-experimental), ethics, the reliability and validity of measures and field designs, as well as exploring some basic issues in questionnaire design and qualitative methods.

Target Students

Classes

Twenty hours of lectures

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

Tointroducethefundamental theory and assumptions underlyinganalysis of experimental and qualitative data.Toexplainthe majortypes of statistical analysis approaches, including:when they are applicable, the assumptionstheyrequire, theprocedure to be followed, andhow their results should be interpreted. To provide practical instruction on the use of statistical software tocompute and report analyses.Tointroduceimportant aspects of psychological research methodology, including research ethics, validity and design.

Learning Outcomes

Explain the basic principles underlying analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple linear regression, exploratory factor analysis, and qualitative research.

Calculate basic statistics from an empirical data set.

Analyse an empirical data set using the appropriate statistical technique, demonstrate the validity of required assumptions, and interpret the outcome in terms of the original research question.

Describe and evaluate methods of data collection in qualitative research.

Apply the methodological procedures associated with thematic analysis.

Explain and assess important issues in psychology, including: the reliability and validity of research designs; causal inference; statistical power; questionable research practices; and ethical issues.
