Summary
The module supports the development of practical and conceptual skills necessary for running experiments in psychology and interpreting data. Skills include: study design; interpretation of summary quantitative and qualitative data; analysis of quantitative and qualitative data; implementing experiments with the computer-based user-interface PsychoPy; writing up appropriate reports; working independently as well as in groups.
Target Students
Diploma in Psychology (conversion) and Masters (conversion) in psychology students
Classes
- One 1-hour workshop each week for 10 weeks
- One 2-hour practicum each week for 20 weeks

- 10% Coursework 1: Practical Report

Educational Aims
These practicals give students hands-on experience with designing and running Psychology studies, as well as analysing, interpreting data, and writing reports. These practical skills require some reference to content taught in statistical courses. These practicals will provide students with the ability to conduct and evaluate research studies, interpret findings from inferential statistical tests, complete qualitative analyses, develop skills in project management and teamwork.Learning Outcomes
- Competency at APA-standard graphs. Usually in MS Excel.
- Competency at describing results (e.g., what does your Excel graph tell you' Does the statistical test back this up').
- Competency at report writing.
- Competency at building experiments with PsychoPy.
- Competency at using and interpreting ANOVA for one-way and factorial designs (Unique to Autumn Semester, classes 1 and 2).
- Competency at using and interpreting some multiple regression (Unique to Spring Semester, class 3).
- Competency at using and interpreting thematic analysis (Unique to Spring Semester, class 4).
