Summary

The central theme of this module is to explore how cognition functions in the real world, and to demonstrate the relevance of cognitive psychology to everyday life. In particular, it will address how cognitive models and theories can be applied to tasks that we all perform. Typical topics that will be covered include driving, memory for emotional events, risky decision making, cultural effects on cognition and learning and using a second language. As well covering contemporary cognitive psychology at an advanced level, components of the module will also integrate across other relevant research areas, including developmental psychology and cognitive neuroscience.

Target Students

Primarily for BSc Psychology, BSc Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience and BSc Psychology and Philosophy students, MSci Psychology. Also available to MSc Psychology Conversion students.

Educational Aims

To provide an understanding of contemporary issues in the study of cognitive processes and how they relate to everyday activities in the real world. The aim of the module is to inform senior undergraduates in psychology of investigations of contemporary significance, and also to support an in-depth understanding of a particular issue of interest.
