Summary
This module introduces students to basic issues in research design, and to the statistical representation and analysis of data, with the aid of SPSS. Material covers: (1) simple experimental and correlational research designs; (2) simple statistical procedures for describing data on different measurement scales; (3) parametric and non-parametric statistical hypothesis testing procedures including chi-square tests, t-tests and their non-parametric equivalents; (4) univariate analysis of variance, zero order and partial, correlations, simple linear regression and the use of resampling methods.
Target Students
Primarily for Psychology and Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience students.This module is not available forYear 3 Psychology students.
Assessment
- 50% Exam 1 (1-hour): ExamSys exam.
- 50% Exam 2 (1-hour): ExamSys exam.
Assessed in both autumn & spring semest
Educational Aims
To provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the issues underlying experimental and correlational research designs. To equip students with appropriate procedures for describing data statistically. To enable students to select and conduct simple statistical hypothesis procedures and draw appropriate conclusions.Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module each student should:
(1) have a good overview of the issues that underlie experimental and correlational research designs;
(2) understand issues concerning statistical hypothesis testing;
(3) be able to select, conduct and report appropriate descriptive statistics;
(4) be able to select, conduct and report a range of inferential statistical procedures.
