Summary
This module will offer an overview of the essential knowledge, skills and orientations essential for the practice of counseling. It provides a solid understanding of the counseling process and hands-on-training for basic counseling skills.
Target Students
2nd year and above in BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology & Management Studies; 2nd year and above FASS and Engineering; 2nd year and above in Psychology
Classes
- One 2-hour tutorial each week for 5 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 13 weeks
Assessment
- 50% Coursework 1: 2000 words case study
- 50% Exam 1 (1-hour): 1 hour exam
Assessed by end of spring semester
Educational Aims
On completion of the module students gain an understanding of the major theoretical approaches to counseling, including basic concepts, principles, and processes. At the end of the module, students are expected to meaningfully integrate learned theories with the counseling strategies and micro-skills with which to implement them.Learning Outcomes

•The theoretical underpinnings of areas of research and practice in applied psychology
•How the theories and research they study can be used to generate practical advice and interventions

•The cognitive skills of critical thinking, analysis and synthesis, including the ability to identify assumptions, define terms, etc.
c) Professional Practical Skills
•The ability to apply business and applied psychology models to real-world problems and phenomena
•Self-awareness, openness and sensitivity to diversity in terms of people, cultures, business and management issues
d) Transferable (Key) Skills
•Effective oral and written communication skills in a range of traditional and electronic media
•Learning to learn and developing an appetite for reflective, adaptive and collaborative learning
•The interpersonal skills for effective listening, negotiating, persuasion and presentation
