Summary

This module involves a part-time placement (equivalent of 1 day a week) in an external organisation. It is aimed at developing hands-on work experience and employability skills relevant to students of Politics. It also offers students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with a range of real world political and policy-making processes relevant to their host organisations. Training will be provided via workshops. Each placement will be arranged by the Faculty Work Placement Manager. Placements will be provided by organisations involved in private, public and third sector organisations, such as the civil service, charities, trade unions and political parties.

Target Students

Available to Final Year UG students in the School of Politics and International Relations on single honours plans. Also available to Final Year UG students on the Politics and Economics plan, Final Year UG students on the Politics and Philosophy plan, and Final Year MSci International Relations and Global Issues students. If choosing POLI3083, students cannot choose POLI3131.

Classes

This module is taught through a combination of workshops and a placement.

Educational Aims

This module aims to support students’ personal and professional development by offering them work experience in an organisation relevant to their degree programme. The module will develop student employability through: seeking and gaining a work placement; being in a workplace reflecting on that experience; and applying the skills developed through their degree programme in a workplace. The module will also encourage students to identify and develop hard and soft skills that will benefit their employability.

Learning Outcomes

a) Knowledge and understanding: The goals and ethos of the host organisation; How to maximise the transferable skills gained in their degree programme; How to relate academic theory and methods to real situations in the workplace and to related political processes (lobbying, policy-making, political organising and campaigning, private-public partnerships, etc.).

b) Intellectual skills: Perform a variety of tasks with precision; Employ analysis and sound reasoning to personal development and employability; Reflect critically on their independent learning and self-management; Identify skills gaps and translate these into achievable goals; Analyse the organisational dynamics and politics related to their workplace; Use their initiative dealing with challenges and opportunities in the working environment.

c) Professional and transferable skills: Communicate professionally; Develop digital skills; Exercise coordination skills; Conduct themselves professionally in a work environment; Communicate effectively and clearly in written formats; Recognise and reflect on working challenges and to learn from their resolution; Work under pressure and develop their time-management skills; Prioritise work and achieve set goals; Engage in critical reflection.
