Summary

Summary of Content: This module develops a range of modern astronomical techniques through student-centered approaches to topical research problems. The module will cover a range of topics related to ongoing research in astronomy and astrophysics, and will encompass theoretical and observational approaches. The course consists of two separate components.

Part I: Students will be required to write and present a white paper on a broad topic in astronomy, reviewing the relevant literature, explaining clearly the outstanding problems in the field, and outlining how these problems might be addressed over the next 10 years.

Part II: Students will work in groups to write a detailed observing proposal to tackle a specific astrophysical question using the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The students will then critically assess and evaluate all telescope proposals in the form of referee reports and a mock time allocation committee.

Target Students

Students in the 4th year of MSci Physics, MathematicalPhysics, CMP and Natural Sciences programmes.

Classes

This module is based on individual and group student-led activities involving the solution of topical problems including written reports and exercises, and a project.

Assessment

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

To introduce the students to a broad range of theoretical and observational techniques used by research astronomers, and to develop expertise in these techniques by applying them to specific problems; to give an overview of some important unsolved research problems in astronomy; to develop the advanced analytical skills needed to handle complex open-ended theoretical research problems, and apply a range of methods in unfamiliar settings; to familiarise students with the observational facilities and instrumentation available for astronomical research, the science outcomes that can be achieved with these facilities, and the procedures used to obtain time on them.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will have enhanced their:

• A1 knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics, and astronomical techniques
• A2 knowledge and understanding of the scientific method.
• A3 understanding of how the basic principles of astrophysics are applied in a range of situations.
• A6 knowledge of the fundamental principles and applications of advanced astrophysics at, or informed by, the forefront of the discipline.

Intellectual Skills
On successful completion of the module, students will have demonstrated their ability to:

• B1 apply theoretical ideas to the quantitative analysis of physical situations.
• B2 apply high levels of numeracy and analysis.
• B3 apply techniques of problem solving.

Professional/Practical Skills
On successful completion of the module, students will have demonstrated their ability to:

• C1 formulate problems in astrophysics using appropriate mathematical language.
• C2 apply principles of experimental design, methodology and analysis.
• C3 carry out independent scientific investigations.
• C4 model physical problems using appropriate computational methods.

Transferable/Key Skills
On successful completion of the module, students will have demonstrated their ability to:

• D1 develop appropriate strategies for study, including the use of library, human, and electronic sources of information.
• D2 work successfully both independently and as a member of a small team.
• D3 meet deadlines and manage their time effectively.
• D4 make effective use of general IT tools for acquiring, processing, and presenting information.
• D5 communicate effectively in writing, in particular to report critically on the results of an investigation.
• D6 prepare and deliver presentations at a variety of levels and on advanced topics.
• D7 effectively manage their time over a range of activities including collaborative working.
