Summary
In this module students will receive:
- an introduction to the basic techniques and equipment used in experimental physics
- training in the analysis and interpretation of experimental data
- a basic practical introduction to geometrical and physical optics
- opportunities to observe phenomena discussed in theory modules
- training in the skills of record keeping and writing scientific reports
Target Students
Students in Year 2 of Chemistry & Molecular Physics and Natural Sciences programmes.
Classes
This module is based on a set of practical sessions in the autumn semester and a series of practicals in the spring semester supplemented by lectures.
Assessment
- 60% Laboratory: Continuous assessment of diaries
- 40% Report: Formal Reports

This module aims to provide students with training in the basic methods of experimental physics and the recording, analysis and presentation of experimental results.Learning Outcomes
