Summary

The focus of this course is:

The acquisition of knowledge and skills in the management of individuals from specific populations e.g paediatrics, adolescents, exercising older adult, female athlete, chronic health conditions. Key aspects of rehabilitation and performance enhancement in these groups will be considered.



 

Target Students

Level 3 Sport Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy students.

Classes

A combination of lectures, tutorials, blended learning and seminars (up to 100 hours).

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

This course aims to prepare students to be able to work with specific populations, including, for example children, adolescents, female athlete including pregnant women, the older athlete and those with chronic conditions. Exercise physiologyin key groups will also be considered, and any other special requirements when rehabilitating/enhancing sports performance in these groups.

Discuss particular risks to the health and wellbeing of exercising individuals from specific populations.

Discuss strategies to reduce risks to health and wellbeing of the exercising individual from specific populations.

Evaluate the research evidence for guidelines/recommendations for safe exercise and sport in specific client groups.

Devise and implement an exercise programme for a client with a chronic condition or from a specific population.
