Summary
The module will cover questions in the philosophy of language and metaphysics. Typical topics covered include (but are not limited to):
- Essence, grounding, and the nature of modality
- Causation, counterfactuals, and laws of nature
- Nature of time and space
- Theory of meaning (including proper names)
- Speech act theory and pragmatics
- Discourse about fictions
Target Students
MA students in Philosophy.
Classes
- One 2-hour seminar each week for 10 weeks
Assessment
- 100% Coursework 1: 5,000 word essay

Educational Aims
The module aims to provide the opportunity for advanced study of several topics in the philosophy of langauge and metaphysics as well as enhancing the skills required to carry out research in philosophy.Learning Outcomes
A. Knowledge and Understanding
By the end of this module you should be able to understand the main positions in the debates about philosophy of language and metaphysics discussed in the module. You should also have an awareness of the range of topics and approaches within the philosophy of language and metaphysics.
B. Intellectual skills
By the end of this module you should be able to analyse and evaluate rival views on these topics.
C. Transferable skills
By the end of this module you should be able to scrutinize your own and others’ views about the topics discussed in the module, and express views clearly and concisely in writing.
