Summary

The pharmacokinetics (PK) of drugs is a crucial aspect of drug discovery and development, while an awareness of the potential for toxicological events is also essential in the pursuit of a successful medicine. This module provides an in-depth review of the principles of pharmacokinetics and toxicology in drug discovery and development from preclinical stages through to Investigational New Drug, clinical trials and launch.

The lectures and workshops material cover the following areas:

Target Students

Students on MSc Drug Discovery orMSc Drug Discovery with Industrial Training (2 year)

Classes

Note that the following is an estimate only: 24 hours contact time, 20 hours directed learning, 156 hours self-directed study, revision and assessment. Total = 200 hours.

Assessment

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

This module explores the role of pharmacokinetics in pre-clinical and clinical stages of the drug discovery and development process covering the in vivo administration of drugs and the key areas of absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination and toxicity. In addition to the lecture course, students will engage in workshops designed to illustrate the principles of predictive modelling of drug disposition.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module the student will be able to:

a) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding through ability to:

b) Demonstrate an independent ability to:

c) Demonstrate the ability to:
