Summary

This module provides the opportunity to undertake a full-time research project in the pharmaceutical, biotech, healthcare or related industry where you will develop the application of science.

Target Students

Available to MSci Pharma Science with Year in Industry students.

Assessed by end of summer vacation

Educational Aims

By the end of this module, students should be able to: Read, consolidate and contextualize information from scientific journals or reference material. Make confident use of library resources, both in the paper and electronic media. Search the available scientific literature or databases for useful and relevant information. Carry out critical analysis and evaluation of published scientific literature. Contribute to the design and execution of data gathering-and-analysis, based in laboratories or elsewhere. Develop strong problem-solving skills. Carry out critical analysis and evaluation of data. Develop high quality generic communication and time management skills. Competently describe and defend the work in an oral communication. Present the literature and research work in the form of a concise scientific report.

Learning Outcomes

A. Knowledge and understanding
A6 Demonstrate and critically evaluate advanced scholarship in an  area of pharmaceutical science;
A7 Demonstrate an understanding of aspects of business and management systems relevant to the functioning of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry, including equality and research ethics, innovation, intellectual property, medicines regulation and quality by design.

B. Intellectual skills
B1 Critically appraise, analyse and summarise information, in particular in the context of pharmaceutical science;
B3 Understand principles of experimental and research methodology in order to address questions and problems related to pharmaceutical science;
B4 Critically examine scientific data in areas related to pharmaceutical science.

C. Professional/practical skills
C2 Undertake practical experimental work using appropriate materials, operating procedures and instruments;
C3 Undertake numerical tasks and carry out quantitative analysis relevant to pharmaceutical science;
C6 Apply and report scientific knowledge in an ethical manner.

D1 Critically use information resources, including library and electronic sources;
D4 Consolidate evidence from a range of sources in order to solve scientific and business problems.
