Summary
This course explores issues of a politico-social nature, biological science (cardiac, respiratory and renal) and clinical practice to enhance and meet the management needs of this group of neonates, infants and children within a high technological environment. A focus on anatomy and physiology will lead into the pathophysiology of these identified systems. A blended learning approach will cater for the specialities of neonates, children’s high dependency care and children’s intensive care. Management topics will include haemodynamic monitoring for all specialities, in-depth ventilation techniques for neonates and children’s intensive care; and basic ventilation skills for high dependency care. Topics such as oxygen and humidification will be for all specialities.
Target Students
Registered nurses working within neonatal units (all levels), paediatric critical care, high dependency and ward environments. Also suitable for students undertaking optional coursesas part of a pathway.
Classes
- One 4-hour seminar each week for 8 weeks
- One 3-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 8 weeks
Total contact time: 60 hours; independent study: 140 hours
Assessment
- 100% Coursework: Portfolio of evidence 4,000 words meeting clinical and/or professional outcomes dependent on if the student is working within neonates/paediatrics OR If no access to an appropriate clinical area: to undertake a 4,000 word essay on an aspect of care that requires practice development and is relevant to the area of practice

Educational Aims
This course will enable the practitioner to lead and develop clinical practice within the speciality of high dependency or critical care of the neonate, infant or child. Exploring issues of politico-social nature, biological science (cardiac, respiratory and renal) and clinical practice will enhance meeting the management needs of this group of children within a high technological environment.Learning Outcomes
Critically evaluate the impact of socio-politico-economic issues of the health service on the high dependency and critical care specialities in relation to the child, family and multi-disciplinary team.
Critically appraise concepts of assessment of critical illness with in children in order to develop appropriate evidence-based care.
Critically appraise the planned care of the high dependency or critical care neonate or child to ensure appropriate clinical management to discharge from care into the community.
Examine different approaches to decision-making skills utilised in practice to ensure holistic assessment of the high dependency or critically ill neonate or child and management needs are met within a flexible environment.
Critically appraise the role of the nurse and multi-disciplinary team in the high technology environment to ensure the management needs of the highly dependent or critically ill neonate or child are met.
Justify the ethico-legal position of the multi-disciplinary team, child and family to ensure a balanced approach to managing such situations in the high technological environment.
