Summary

This course will consolidate and extend students’ knowledge of the theories and principles underpinning teaching, learning and assessment. Specifically, this is done in relation to health care subjects, and considers education in both academic and practice settings. The contextual factors that influence the role of health care teachers will be explored and the implications of these for student learning in modern health care settings will be debated. The tensions that exist between theory and practice will be examined in the context of contemporary policy issues and research.

Target Students

Registered health and social care practitioners with experience or expectation of teaching and assessing in health care practice and/or academic environments.

Classes

Lecture: 6 weeks/1 session/week; 1 hour Tutorial: 6 weeks/1 session/week; 2 hours Workshop: 6 weeks/1 session/week; 2 hours

Assessed by end of spring semester

Educational Aims

The aim of the course is to consolidate and extend students’ knowledge of the theories and principles underpinning teaching, learning and assessment in relation to health care.

Learning Outcomes

Evaluate a variety of different teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation strategies.

Explore the factors that influence theoretical and practice learning in health and social care environments and in higher education.
 

Analyse the role and attributes of the effective educator in health and social care settings and critically consider factors that influence this role.

Plan, implement and facilitate learning in health and social care settings and in higher education.

Application of critical reflection and critical appraisal through the development of an educational programme.
