This module considers:
- Core values and principles underpinning nursing: accountability and candour, duty of care, safeguarding, legal and ethical frameworks, equality, diversity and inclusion across a range of healthcare settings
- Professional responsibility, regulation and evidence promoting safe and effective practice for people in diverse settings.
- The principles of nursing care delivery including the clinical skills and knowledge required for essential nursing practice to include: hydration, nutrition, elimination, mobility, hygiene, skin integrity, basic emergency care, communication/interpersonal skills, nursing assessments, care planning, basic medicine calculations and infection control.
- Aspects of biosciences that form the foundation to safe and effective person centred nursing care: to critically analyse current understanding of homeostasis, human anatomy and physiology, biology genomics and pharmacology.
- The development of life-long learning skills and professional knowledge to promote public confidence in the nursing profession

Educational Aims
This module aims to introduce students to the concept of nursing values, professional practice, duty of care, legal and ethical frameworks, equality, diversity and inclusion. Additionally the module will enable students to explore important aspects of biosciences that inform safe and effective person centred nursing care. Students will be encouraged to link theory and practice through a blend of simulated clinical learning,and Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) case studies to support professional practice.Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate and critically appraise how a detailed understanding of homeostasis, human anatomy and physiology, biology, genomics, pharmacology, social and behavioural sciences can promote physical and mental health when delivering person centred care at all stages of life
Demonstrate professional values and standards of behaviours reflecting regulatory legal and ethical requirements promoting public confidence in the profession
Develop knowledge and skills in order to assess people’s needs and deliver essential nursing care using evidence based practice
Develop appropriate communication skills, recognise the barriers to communication and how to build appropriate professional relationships
Develop as a reflective practitioner identifying own learning needs, building upon clinical practice experiences and feedback to develop goals and inform future practice
