Educational Aims

This courseaims to develop the student’s ability to understand, implement and evaluate the CBT disorder specific treatment protocols for acute depression; social anxiety; panic disorder with and without agoraphobia; GAD; health anxiety; OCD and PTSD. This includes the ability to develop hypotheses regarding psychological development and maintenance factors (formulation) to current problems as a basis for implementing core CBT principles and practices within CBT protocols for anxiety disorders and depression.Students will use the Scientist Practitioner Model as a foundation and in this context will critically analyse and synthesise data to consider making psychological sense of presenting problems and devising, implementing and evaluating concordant treatment plans. This will include decision-making regarding when it is in the patient’s best interests to not make an intervention. The course also aims to develop students understanding and knowledge of working with diversity and difference within a CBT model.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the role of the disorder specific maintenance formulation in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression.

Demonstrate knowledge of the role of psychometric and idiographic measurement in CBT treatment of anxiety disorders and depression using a protocol driven intervention.

Demonstrate knowledge of the adaptations required when using CBT interventions with older adults.

Formulate and justify clinical interventions using the Scientist Practitioner Model within the theory and practice of CBT assessment.

Adapt and modify CBT interventions to meet the specific needs of clients presenting in services taking into consideration culture, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age and class.
