Summary

This course will consoidate students' understanding of the historical and contemporary context for advanced nursing.  It aims to equip students with a critical understanding of the application of personal and professional frameworks for advanced nursing.  It will introduce the theoretical and practical concepts central to advanced nursing within national and international contexts.

The course will comprise 60 hours tutor led taught sessions and 140 hours self-directed study and tutorial support

Assessed by end of autumn semester

Educational Aims

Through completing this course, students will gain an in-depth understanding of a) the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of advanced nursing and b) the role of the advanced level nurse in practice.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate understanding of the historical development and contemporary implementation of advanced nursing roles. and clinical leadership role of the advanced practice nurse. 

Critically appraise the contribution of advanced nursing to improve standards of service delivery.

Critically reflect on previous experiential learning and apply theoretical and practical learning to advanced nursing with a professionally relevant sub-role.

Synthesise knowledge to evaluate advanced nursing practice.

Plan, develop and evaluate a realistic and well-justified plan to advance nursing and develop a portfolio of evidence documenting a planned advance in practice.

Analyse their personal learning objectives and evaluate their own professional development and effectively manage their time and work to deadlines.
