Summary
This course aims to further develop fundamental principles of nursing children and young people and apply these to caring for the injured or sick child or young person (CYP) with requiring high dependency specialist nursing care.
The student can expect to build upon previous learning to further develop knowledge, understanding and skills in assessing, managing and delivering holistic evidence-based care to CYP and their families. The course additionally aims to broaden students’ clinical, interpersonal and communication skills
This practically based course integrates the use of clinical skills through blending simulation learning with e-learning. It is anticipated that students will make use of the available e-learning support to critically and analytically apply theoretical principles to nursing practice of children and young people and their families.

Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): ExamSys Exam, Scenario based exam using MCQ and short answers.

Educational Aims
This course provides students with the opportunities to further develop and apply existing understanding, skills, beliefs and strategic thinking within the acquisition of new knowledge and skills relevant to the diverse care needs and care demands of children with critical, complex and/or life threatening illness.Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate and understand a structured ABCDE approach to facilitating the rapid recognition of the seriously and/or critically-ill child and young person.
2. Critically analyse the use of technological and high dependency interventions in the care of very sick children and young people.
3. Deconstruct and evaluate the roles of healthcare practitioners and families in the light of current childcare policy, beliefs and evidence.
