Summary

This course considers individuals with impaired/compromised skin integrity and the theoretical principles underpinning the assessment and management of wounds experienced by adults, children and for people experiencing mental health.
Anatomy of the skin; 
Physiology of wound healing; 
barriers to wound healing; 
Classification of wound types; 
Principles of skin/wound assessment; 
Nutrition and wound healing; 
Cellulitis; Surgical site infection; Anti-microbials. 
Acute wounds - wound care in the neonate/infant/child; self-harm wounds; burn trauma; palliative wound care; assessment and management of skin tears; pilonidal sinus; traumatic injuries. 
Hard to heal wounds; pressure ulcer prevention strategies, risk assessment and classification; moisture associated skin damage; pathophysiology; assessment and treatment of arterial and venous ulceration to the lower limb. 
Pain management; Principles of wound hygiene; Wound dressings; Advanced wound care interventions; larval therapy; topical negative pressure wound therapy. 
Professional, legal and ethical aspects of wound care; record keeping and accountability in practice. 
The impact of local/national/international guidelines and directives on clinical practice.

Educational Aims

Completion of this course will enable students to advance their knowledge in compromised skin integrity and contemporary wound care practices to promote evidence-based practice and to develop problem-solving and clinical decision-making skills

Learning Outcomes

Interpret research and other forms of evidence influencing the assessment and management of wounds in healthcare practice;

Apply theoretical principles and knowledge acquisition to inform the delivery of evidence-based practice;

 Review and evaluate a range of assessment and preventative strategies from a local/national/international and organisational perspective to justify a rationale for care and therapeutic interventions to promote skin integrity and wound healing;

 Utilise problem-solving and decision-making skills in light of current and emerging evidence to enhance wound care practices across the lifespan;

 Explore the legal, ethical and professional accountability of healthcare professionals in the context of patient care and wound care practices; 

Apply theoretical principles to support improvements in clinical practice and critically evaluate research/literature and local/national guidelines to improve future practice.
