Summary
Students will be empowered to provide contemporary research and evidence-based diabetes management, in partnership with the person with diabetes.
This course considers:
- Aetiology and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus;
- Evidence-based treatment eg use of insuling therapy, oral agents, nutritional recommendations and management of diabetes throughout the life-span including acute metabolic emergencies and surgery and the complications of diabetes;
- The complexity and progressive nature of diabetes and its complications and subsequent psychological and social implications;
- Current research and policy developoments eg National Service Framework for Diabetes, Clinical Governance initiatives and Department of Health policy on modernisation of health and social care and the management of long term conditions, with implications for the management of the diabetes;
- Person-cetnred care/service, to include user involvement and patient expertise, self-management and partnership with health care professionals;
- Promoting and maintaining the health of people with diabetes thorugh structured patient education and empowerment.
