Summary
This course considers:
- The knowledge of fundamental principles in nursing the neonate;
- Contemporary neonatal care explored through discussion and critical analysis of local and national policies, political and economic issues and relevant research and current evidence for clinical practice;
- Emphasis on introducing and exploring the evidence base, policies, legal and ethical issues;
- Physiological development, care assessment, management and delivery of evidence based practice;
- Understanding the effects of illness at birth, the consequence of pre-term birth and the complexities of caring for the neonate with immature body systems;
- Technological, ethical, cultural and legal perspectives will be explored to examine the role of the nurse in facilitating a partnership with the neonate’s parents, siblings and extended family.

Assessment
- 100% Exam 1 (2-hour): 2 Hour exam to address learning outcomes and module content

Educational Aims
This course aims to provide the opportunities to explore and develop knowledge of fundamental principles in the nursing the neonate and to develop the students’ practical, clinical, interpersonal and communication skills required to provide holistic and evidence based nursing to neonates and their families.Learning Outcomes
Explore, develop and apply analytical skills in understanding fundamental concepts in neonatal care.
Demonstrate and analyse a structured approach to assessing and caring for the neonate.
Deconstruct and evaluate the roles of healthcare practitioners and families in the light of current neonatal policy, beliefs and evidence.
