Summary
The course considers:
- Total patient care, management and prioritisation;
- Human factors, quality improvement;
- A-E assessment and deterioration using simulated patients;
- Importance of timely interventions, understanding of altered pathophysiology in ill health. Ability to relate it to different disease processes;
- Basic blood results, chest X-rays interpretation, chest auscultation, ECGs, venepuncture, venecannulation;
- Simulated caseload management to develop leadership skills;
- Consider complex care across acute and community settings, especially in terms of social/emotional impact and psychological health including recognising and supporting those that show signs of self-harm and/or suicidal ideation.

- 40% Reflection: Reflection on a practical assessment (Up to 1,000 words)
- 60% Practical: Practical assessment of managing a simulated patient (20 minutes)

Educational Aims
This course aims to develop the principles of caring for the injured or sick person with critical, complex and/or life threatening illnesses or treating clients with serious and enduring mental illness. Students will build upon previous learning that relates to total patient care and management of the deteriorating patient or patients in recovery and escalation of care for patients.Learning Outcomes
Critically analyse how human factors can contribute to improving quality of care and treatment given to improve people’s experience of care.
Demonstrate effective collaboration and communication with colleagues, people and families to help them to manage their care needs at any stage of their lives including management of the deteriorating patient and safe transition of care.
Demonstrate the ability to engage with the multidisciplinary team, to negotiate and advocate on behalf of patients and their families to support the delivery of complex care pathways and packages of care to meet individual needs across physical, mental, behavioural and cognitive health.
Provide leadership by demonstrating best practice through safely managing a simulated caseload of patients, responding appropriately to any eventuality and demonstrate the ability to delegate care appropriately to others.
