Summary
This module investigates the origins of jazz in ragtime and the blues, and the development of contrasting jazz styles from 1917 to the present day. Topics include: New Orleans and Chicago ensemble jazz; Harlem stride piano; swing bands; be-bop and hard bop; the cool school; modal jazz; free jazz; symphonic jazz; jazz-rock fusion and other jazz-related fusion styles; and jazz film scores
Target Students
Available to all Year 3 students including Liberal Arts, exchange and subsidiary students. Students are unable to enrol on this module if they have previously taken MUSI2011 Jazz: Origins and Styles
Classes
- One 1-hour workshop each week for 5 weeks
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 5 weeks
- One 2-hour lecture each week for 11 weeks
One 2-hour lecture per week; one 1-hr seminar per fortnight with structured listening sessions on alternate weeks. Breakdown of hours: classes - 33 hours; individual study - 167 hours. Two 2-hour drop-in slots will be scheduled for students to discuss coursework with the module convenor.
Assessment
- 70% Coursework: 1 x 3600 - 4000 word essay
- 30% Take home exam (24-hour)

Educational Aims
To provide a broad overview of the history of jazz styles from the music’s genesis to the present day, and to explore cultural, racial, analytical and aesthetic issues associated with them at each stage in the music’s development.Learning Outcomes
