Summary

This year-long module centres on participation in primary school music teaching in partnership with the Nottingham Music Hub. Students attend weekly in-school sessions throughout the autumn and spring semesters, assisting with Nottingham First Access mentoring (In Harmony and/or Whole Class Ensemble) or contributing to the direction of post-first-access ensembles. Across the autumn and spring semesters, fortnightly workshops will supplement the in-school experience with sessions on topics pertinent to music education, such as The National Plan for Music Education and musical inclusion and teaching in inner-city schools.

Target Students

Only available to Year 2 Single and Joint Hons Music students including Liberal Arts students who have passed both MUSI1003 Elements of Music I and MUSI1009 Elements of Music II

Educational Aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to nurture essential understanding, knowledge and practical skills in music education. Students will gain greater confidence in their ability to teach music in schools at primary and secondary levels. Potential applicants to PGCE courses will gain invaluable teaching experience and understanding of children’s musical learning which will strengthen their credentials for employment as music educators in a variety of contexts. Students will also have the opportunity to generate evidence towards the national Certificate for Music Educators qualification, run locally through Nottingham Music Hub and the Music Education Hubs in the East Midlands.

Develop understanding of pedagogical skills in music and children’s musical learning through practical experience in primary schools.

Develop their knowledge of key theoretical arguments concerning primary school music education and the National Music Plan.

Be able to evaluate the needs of primary school music students, especially those from more deprived backgrounds.

Develop understanding of how to structure and organise classes for primary school learners.

Analyse their experiences and personal development as teachers by completing a written project and presentation towards the end of the module.
