Summary
This module offers an introduction to the principal genres, stylistic trends and cultural contexts of a wide range of music from the 'long' twentieth century (i.e. from the late nineteenth century to the present day). Topics covered may include: impressionism; modernism; neo-classicism; atonality and its consequences; nationalism; film music; jazz; cross-cultural influences; minimalism.
Target Students
Available to all Year 1 students including Liberal Arts, exchange and subsidiary students.
Classes
- One 1-hour seminar each week for 11 weeks
- One 1-hour-30-minute lecture each week for 11 weeks
Assessment
- 70% Coursework: 1 x 2250-2500 word essay
- 30% Take home exam (24-hour)

Educational Aims
To (i) develop a knowledge and critical understanding of key repertoire, (ii) encourage an appreciation of the extra-musical dimension of a wide variety of works and styles, (iii) promote a lively aesthetic and critical response to the music, (iv) ascertain its relevance to other repertoires and styles.Learning Outcomes
(i) critical familiarity with key works from the repertoire;
(ii) analytical and interpretative skills;
(iii) an understanding of some of the ways in which cultural, political and social conditions have shaped the repertoires.
